Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What one person thinks to be not spectacular may have quite an "awe" factor to someone else.
As someone who loves photographing insects, I can vouch for how difficult it is getting a good photo. I've taken 30 photos of an insect just to get "the one."
The wonderful thing about digital photography is how forgiving it is in that it allows you to experiment with no cost but your time. I too agree that the more you shoot, the better you will become, but only as long as you take the time to examine your photos and determine what you have to do to take it where you want them.
There's also the issue of becoming familiar with the camera to the point where its functions become second nature. Once that barrier is out of the way you can concentrate on the important stuff. Now, where did I put that K10D manual...
