card recovery software

Hi everyone, I just spotted that Lexar have a new version of their card recovery software and it appears to be free, previous versions had a download charge.
I have the previous version and it works well on any brand of card.

If it was free before then it certainly changed quick.

The Website now says LexarŽ Image RescueŽ 4 Software - $33.99 in prominent font size, and the download version demands a serial number to be entered or it will only start in 30 day trial mode.

IIRC it comes 'free' on some of their expensive cards anyway, so that might be a less costly route. ( or d/l a keygen or patch for it )
Nope, looks like they only include "Image recovery service available" or "Adobe trialware offers" nowadays:

http://www.cheapchips.com.au/memory/lexar-platinum-ii-sdhc-card-class-6-8gb-100x.html
Yep, my memory wasn't failing, this 16GB Lexar one includes v3 of Image Rescue:

Maybe Sandisk too, do they still bundle a recovery prog with some of their Cards or Sticks or just that silly U3 and Backup rubbish?

Oula,
Thansks for the suggestion.

I just noted that Recuva is developed by the same company that produces CCleaner, an outstanding freeware utility that I have used for several years.

I will put Recuva to the test at my next crash.

Free is always good, but check the app out first. Erase some photos of your card and test whether the free app works. Some that say they're free actually only give a preview of the files then tell you to purchase the full program.

Recuva is really free, but it's Windows only. Don't know of a free Mac app. But then I don't mind paying $30-40 for the peace of mind that having a good quality recovery app gives me. Seems reasonable considering all I've spent on camera, lenses and other equipment. Once I realized how much time I used to waste trying to find free options or workarounds I did an attitude change and don't begrudge commercial software. I get paid for some of my photos, why shouldn't others get paid for their work too?

It may not be the best, but Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery App has worked for me and I've recovered files for several other people with it.

Let's say you can get the jpg files off the card, but they won't open due to some corruption. What are the chances you are getting them back?

That's not an uncommon occurrence esp with inferior ware, ie. that files will be gung-ho written out either truncated, or otherwise inter-corrupted and not decipherable by the OS or apps. Yet the s/w will always boast "I got it for you".

Reconstructing and rebuilding is not for the faint hearted either but sometimes you can gain say n %age of a pic renderable with help of some utilities. Might be worth the bother seeking out this avenue in some cases.

I've only ever had serious reliable recovery success with some of the professional paywares, and therefore am wary of trusting, my data is usually worth the cost of the insurance anyway.

Of course not all files are in recoverable state off a given failed media, but at least good software knows all the tricks of FS's and tackles the recovery task safely without creating more harm. The impossibles that are genuinely overwritten or are too broken (chain) linked on the media you simply have to write off and wear it.

Recommendations? None really, from me anyway. Decades of PC use has shown there is [still] no miracle ware or 100% success outstanding "best" out there, and the more reliable FS's have mostly supplanted need for that genre of s/w to progress. (except for flash media where FAT/32 is still used, exFAT should prove be marginally better too when it gains adoption)

Of course avoiding crap flash media is always the sound option. (In that sense, choice of a card has become as important as brand/model choice of hard disks - thus reliability reputation stands taller than price or speed! to me anyway.)

Sorry that's not much help for an immediate need. I fully realise how disappointing and frustrating it can be.

keep trying with a couple different brands of software.
I would recommend PC Inspector SMART RECOVERY though I've not tried to use it on a system newer than win2k
Also, it would be a good idea to try using a different card reader.
