That's not an uncommon occurrence esp with inferior ware, ie. that files will be gung-ho written out either truncated, or otherwise inter-corrupted and not decipherable by the OS or apps. Yet the s/w will always boast "I got it for you".
Reconstructing and rebuilding is not for the faint hearted either but sometimes you can gain say n %age of a pic renderable with help of some utilities. Might be worth the bother seeking out this avenue in some cases.
I've only ever had serious reliable recovery success with some of the professional paywares, and therefore am wary of trusting, my data is usually worth the cost of the insurance anyway.
Of course not all files are in recoverable state off a given failed media, but at least good software knows all the tricks of FS's and tackles the recovery task safely without creating more harm. The impossibles that are genuinely overwritten or are too broken (chain) linked on the media you simply have to write off and wear it.
Recommendations? None really, from me anyway. Decades of PC use has shown there is [still] no miracle ware or 100% success outstanding "best" out there, and the more reliable FS's have mostly supplanted need for that genre of s/w to progress. (except for flash media where FAT/32 is still used, exFAT should prove be marginally better too when it gains adoption)
Of course avoiding crap flash media is always the sound option. (In that sense, choice of a card has become as important as brand/model choice of hard disks - thus reliability reputation stands taller than price or speed! to me anyway.)
Sorry that's not much help for an immediate need. I fully realise how disappointing and frustrating it can be.
