I know many photographers that have home studios that make use of off camera flash units like the AF360 and AF540 - some Photographers even use completely manual off brand ones (Vivitar is a popular choice). Depending on the subject, the results can be every bit as good as the full fledged professional Elinchrom units I work with.

there is a Strobist community here that you might find interesting if you choose to go down this path.

Hi, The kit is not bad.
I use purely flash units, manual mode, with radio triggers, very portable. I found powered units powerful and consistent, but too limited regarding portable (and some more expensive). I use whatever flash that have manual power, prefer zoom/tilt/sw like sigma-530-super (for p-ttl) or yn560 or lp120. I can buy 2 or more if compare to AF540, which is double/trippel price and just a bit more powerful. If I need more power, I bundled 2 or 3 or 4 flashes.

You may need to get coloured gel for these, and some light modifiers (gobos, snoots, reflectors, umbrellas, softboxes,..). Such add-on is more expensive for strobes than for flashes. Once you have the gears, it is so fun and rewarded. You are in full control of your light, nothing for granted ;-)

Edit: But the strobes look nicer in your studio, for your clients ;-)

i do have a couple of strobes already...but need stands, radio triggers etc.
once you deduct the cactus radio triggers, plus the stands , these studio heads are only $110us each..seems a very reasonable price ?

I could use the stands etc for my strobes if I want to use them outside...I must admit though, the studio is where I want to concentrate once im set up..plus no batteries and the advantage of modelling lights

It is, and ++ for the modelling, and just more flexible when you have more than two. I also use mini flash units for rim lights or backlit or background lit/fill. They are small and can hide almost anywhere. My stands are from BH, single or kit of 2. I can find some cheaper, but may be not as stable. Clamps are useful too, for me, for use with the flashes.

I guess, when it's set, it's going to be easier for you to differentiate from everyone with a DSLR. It's hard to admit a better picture of their kids costs money, and harder to get them to your studio.

I've never heard in Jinbei. but the Adorama brand has a reasonable reputation. i bought one to use as a background light... FP320M Flashpoint II 320M, 150 Watt Second AC / DC Monolight Strobe.

its cheaper and more powerful than most hotshoe strobes
