Well, at 100ws, the flash units are pretty basic. That level of output isn't going to allow much flexibility when it comes to aperture settings on the camera. However, according to the
owners manual (PDF), the flash units have variable output with a recycle time of roughly 4 seconds, which are both decent specs for a system in this price range. The trigger voltage is 6v DC, which makes these safe to use with a modern DSLR camera. And the kit does offer a good selection of accessories to allow plenty of experimenting with different lighting methods. The only thing missing, of course, is a basic light meter, which could cost $70-120 CAD. All in all, the entire lighting kit is a very competent starter system.
