I got a Highly Commended!

Just wanted to share my joy that a photo I entered and took with the K-x and 18-55 kit lens, won a highly commended award at the Royal Easter show in Sydney! I was so excited to find out it was going to be exhibited, but when I got there, I saw the ribbon on my photo! YaY

Excuse the photo quality but it was taken with my phone.

It was just easier to show my crappy photo cos I knew where it was saved lol.

Here's the low res competition image I know it's not everyone's cup of tea though.

Is that film grain effect or high ISO noise? hard to tell after downsizing, love the coloring!
Did she find her lost puppy? She looks sad!

High Iso noise, it was taken by natural light of an evening. The high res image is a lot cleaner in comparison.

She was going through a bit of a tough stage in her life then, and although she didn't realise it, it showed.

I've got years before I need to worry about my kids having harder to solve problems and dissapointments etc.. ones not quite 2 and the other is 4 1/2. For now its great when they wear their emotions on their sleeves! I find High ISO noise to give quite a different effect than film grain from say 400 ISO.. or a film grain filter through PP. I haven't decided if I like it better or worse than film grain. There are some good noise reduction software utilities for PP work.. I just need to learn how to manipulate them better. When I use it I seem to end up making my images too soft, so its not worth it.

Yeah I try not to use the noise reduction stuff as it looks weirdly smooth I think. From memory I did use a smidge of noise reduction, but not enough that it smoothed. I think the noise suits the emotion in this.

Congratulations Nicole, you have talent, the gear will come eventually that's the easy bit. I'm finding talent a lot harder to come by myself, LOL, unfortunately they don't sell that at the local camera store.

Wow just goes to prove that it is the talent behind the camera and lens combination. Well done, it is not to my taste, but the image is super.

Fantastic Art Nicole. It generates a strong emotion which to me is one of the requirements for great art. Great mood and lighting. I can feel what she is feeling almost.
