buying from Amazon pays off again!

I buy camera equipment mainly from Amazon.com or B&H, and tend to buy from Amazon whenever possible as I can get next-day shipping for very little.

I learned from someone in this forum -- can't remember who it was, but thank you, whoever you are! -- that Amazon will, at least in some cases, refund the difference in price between what you paid and their new price, if the price drops within 30 days of your purchase. I don't know the exact technical rules, so check 'em out for yourself. But that's the general idea.

Anyway, this policy helped me earlier in the year when I got about $75 back on the purchase of my K10D. And I just noticed today that the cost of the Pentax DA* 50-135 f/2.8 ED (IF) SDM had dropped from the $928 I paid October 5 to a current price of $850. Wrote Amazon customer support and very quickly got a note back saying their crediting the difference ($78) to my credit card. Woo-hoo!

I should note that I bought the lens from Amazon even though Amazon's price at the time was higher than the price of the lens from another online vendor. I chose Amazon because I could not actually get the lens from the other vendor as quickly -- and I was in a hurry. And I had a strong hunch that the Amazon price on this item would drop and I'd get the difference back anyway. As it happens, it dropped more than the alternate price that I would have paid originally -- so I got luckier than I deserved.

I shop at B&H for the great selection, good prices, good customer reviews, and lately, they've had tremendous deals on shipping. But I feel I should put in a good word for Amazon given this enlightened policy about price changes, especially since prices DO drop so often in this particular market.

Thanks for the reminder!

There's a couple of sites like http://www.refundplease.com/ which automatically track amazon prices for you specifically for this reason.

That's a good tip, Matt. Can't remember -- it might have been you earlier in the summer who mentioned to me the Amazon policy that I am touting here. Thanks,

I'm glad I read this. I had no idea they did the refund. I've never had any problems with Amazon and this is another check mark for them.
