well I have an intuos 4 and that is exactly what I have done - I still use a mouse for OS tasks, I wear through the nibs too fast to use my wacom tablet for everything - though I do have two pens for my tablet.

I've heard for whatever reason the nibs for the Intuos 4 wear down within a couple weeks. Something about the tablet surface being more abrasive. I've not had to change a nib in my Intuos 3 pen yet -- purchased at the beginning of 2008. Wonder if Wacom will fix that for their next iterations.

The "hard" felt nibs wear down in a matter on hours for me, and I regularly use a fountain pen so i'm not the type of person to push down hard on writing surfaces. The solid plastic nibs are fantastic* though I haven't really changed mine since I got my tablet.

It is true the tablet has a more abrasive surface but IMO it simulates paper better and gives superior feedback when it is in use. There is a transparent and less abrasive tablet surface able to be bought from wacom for the Intuos 4 tablets, but i'm very happy with what I have at the moment.


*I use the hard chisel point nibs with the art pen for photoshop work, I also use the spring loaded brush nib on my regular pen which gives excellent feedback for other editing tasks.
