Google - Search by image

For those of you who haven't used Google images recently (starting June 14th), or simply did not notice, you can now use an image to begin a search on Google images. If you did not IMMEDIATELY get one million ideas about how this could be useful to you: Take a moment to drag your most viewed image on the internet into a Google images search bar. ( images.google.com )

Go ahead, I'll wait...

Awesome? Did you find, say, anyone using your pictures without permission, or some blog who thinks you are the bees knees but you didn't know about because it was linking in such a way that made it an "Unknown Source" on flickr?

Seriously Google, thank you for this one. You've made me even happier than I was before about your gradual rise to power and subsequent takeover of the globe!

Here's a video intro/tutorial as well:

Below you can see what it looks like dragging a picture of a butterfly into the search box:

Thanks for the news. I found out my most popular picture is this one of the supermoon that I posted on spaceweather.com: Full Moon Rising

It was reposted on 12 blogs, a Hungarian news website and is currently the facebook picture of 'Carla Day'.

Next time I'm definitely putting a watermark for my website.

That is insane, I uploaded a band pic and it used the colors and other data to return visually similar images:

That's really cool. I tried a few of my more popular images from Flickr and all the re-postings were mine. So either my watermark is a deterrent or my photos just aren't good enough to steal.

To quote Tommy Boy...

That.... was.... AWWWWESOMMMME!!!!

However, it was also scary. I am going to take a picture of me and search it and see what it says about me as a test.

As usual, that is not working for me.

Would it be possible to "drag and drop" a photo from, let's say, PPG into Google Images?

I tried a couple of times to drop an image that way, but nothing happens.??

Any suggestion as what I am doing wrong?

I dropped several images from my gallery here onto the interface and it found them.... but I know there are other copies out there on my other gallery sites so I'm not sure how comprehensive the search is. I suspect the images have to get into the search pool at some other point before they are indexed into the image search.

What would be most interesting is if they made a version of this which you could use on your own local computer to allow you to find duplicate copies of an image or to find similar images.

I got it to work for PPG images this way:
  • take screenshot of your image, save as JPG onto desktop
  • drag into google images

I also found one of my pictures on a Romanian travel agency's website. Google also (correctly) told me that one of my pictures was taken in Red Rock Canyon.

Glad to help out!

So far only one of my pictures is being used without my consent. Someone is selling several Tamron 70-300's on russian(?) ebay and implying that one of my 70-200 f/2.8 pictures was taken with it...
