Little Laker, after some playing around with my camera, I figured out what you're talking about.
I also have the 'beep' turned on my camera. So now I can manually focus with old M lenses and still know when it is most in focus (well, for the most part. The camera doesn't get it right all the time.... but this is more due to AF in general, not the lens).
