Do people use tripod for shooting behind scene kind of video?

I have a friend going to participate in a music video shootout.

I will go to shoot something like behind scene for him..

I am thinking shoot some video. using my k-5....

What stuffs do I need??

Do people use tripod? or they shoot handheld??

Is 16-50 the best fit?? or 50-135?? I only got these two lens..

This is the size of the studio

I'd stay away from the tripod especially if you want to capture behind the scene, where "spontaneity" is the key, you do not want to be caught unprepared with the camera bolted to the tripod.

I'd use the 16-50; wider lenses are easier to handle for video and will make it easier to handle behind the scene where space is usually more constraint.

Max.

I don't shoot video but I would think that a monopod might work. You could rotate it side to side for panning very easily and would have a little up and down flexibility as well (tilt the monopod forward or backwards).

get a Merlin Steadicam; it's not cheap but the results you get will be hopefully production quality, assuming you're good at post editing later. Wide is best for shooting the type of video you're planning on doing.

Just incase you decide "go cheap"

actually I just test on the new monopod I bought.
I do not see benefit of using it for shooting video...at least while I am moving
Holdheld is more confortable...
I think the reason is that DSLR need manual focus in video mode. so one hand have to put on the lens. and one hand hold the monopod.
it is not as comfortable as handheld..feel not well-balanced.
I suppose the benefit of using monopod is to use both hand hold it, to make a much more stable jesture...I think that is definately true..
but for DSLR type shooting, does not work that well...

I never hold onto the monopod when taking regular pictures. One hand is on the lens and one is on the camera grip/shutter button. I do agree that if you are walking while shooting, the monopod will not be helpful.

Forgot to mention you can rent...check Adorama or B&H for costs BUT you know if you're going to mix the shoot between stills and vid clips you might as well just handhold and put your money towards more faster cards (class10) which you will need if it's a rather long event at least 4x16gb especially if you'll be doing more video vs stills.

Monopod can be a pain for that sort of thing. I find my shoulder mount works best. You can stabilize with one arm on the grip and manually focus with the other.

Get some sort of DSLR shoulder adapter and shoot handheld. On set ENG / EPK crews are handheld and stay out of the way of the principle photography crew. If there is a shot you feel you must have and has been requested as such then coordinate with the AD so it can happen at the appropriate time. You should strive to be unobtrusive.
