Richmond Va. Trip Help

The wife and I are going to Richmond Va. the 7th of Aug for about a week and was wondering where to go and what to see, Willing to travel 100 miles from Richmond if it's worth the trip.. We get about 40 mpg in our new car so gas won't be a problem.
We would like to visit places that accept's camera's, (Notice I didn't say Photographers) and camera bags.

Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive about 70 miles from Richmond I think.

Shenandoah National Park - Driving Skyline Drive (U.S. National Park Service)

[But its best in the fall]

Based on a tip I came across online last month (I'm a regular visitor to Richmond myself) there's Belle Isle which doubles up as a good swimming spot also (apparently, as I haven't visited personally yet).

Google map link is belle isle richmond - Google Maps

Skyline Drive is great but will likely be pretty hazy in August.

There's lots of history in the area. Williamsburg isn't that far from Richmond. Charlottesville, University of Virginia, Monticello, Montpelier, Civil War battlefields, etc.

40 min down I-64 from Richmond is Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown. If you had your fill of the tourist attractions, Jamestown island (not the visitor center) has the real deal. Original digs, James river shoreline and drive, and is an Eagle rookery to boot. Best chance for good Eagle shots of course is early morning when they are in the tree tops by the river before too many people walking around scare them off for the day.

Go to Charlottesville too, if you have time. University of Virginia is very beautiful.

Colonial Williamsburg, Monticello, for sure.
Colonial Williamsburg has lots of living history and re-enactors to capture,
is a great place for people pictures and a good restaurant or two.
I have always found it a fun place and not just another
"National Park Service" type tour thing.
And get a good guidebook for Richmond itself - there is a lot to see
and do right there, and again a good restaurant or two.

If you haven't been there yet, Washington D.C. is within that radius and you could, hypothetically, wear out your camera shutters before you ran out things to shoot!

Just too many things to list, but you could easily spend a day or two along the National mall just shooting photos -- from the Capitol Building to the Lincoln Memorial, and then you have numerous museums, the White House, many historical buildings in downtown DC, National Cathedral, Georgetown area, National Cemetery...

Its a shame that I live here and haven't done that yet since I took up photography
