Depth of feild Question

I have had some good luck producing a few nice DOF photos.
But I am still fuzzy on where to set my focus ring when its in manual.
I have been setting it at 1/3 the distance with some luck, but is that right all the time?
Some of my DOF shots will look out of focus.
Can someone help me out?

Thanks,

Mike

It might not sound like it is a discussion about DOF - but it really is.
Also go to:
Hyperfocal Distance and Depth of Field Calculator - DOFMaster
Download the tool (if you are using Windows) and build your own DOF scale for the focal length in question. Hint, the big arrow is the focus "distance" indicator on the lens - if it has DOF scales you are home free - if not then use the scale you just created.

If you have a PDA (Windows Based) you can go get DOF 1.0 here:
Pocket PC Freeware Downloads
there is another one that runs on the pc and a windows based PDA (a palm one is at dof master).
Another DOF calculator (free) is part of the tools found here.
Tools For Photographers
I have not downloaded any tools from this site - so, your mileage will vary (kilometerage for you metric folks).

Size sensor?

I was looking at the DOF calculator and they ask for the sensor size, what is the sensor size on the K10D?

Thanks,

Mike

According to dpreview (I'd believe them) the k10d's sensor is 23.5mm x 15.7mm.
