I just posted an article on location food photography. Here is a sample image. You can see the whole piece at Everything Photo

Thanks for sharing your article...i found it very intersting. Nice discussion of lighting, and how you decided to use it to highlight specific components of the dish.

Nice post! I prefer honeycomb grids myself when shooting food as I find the 3D modeling it provides to be particularly pleasing. You angled bird's view approach works really well on all shots, but I'd say, don't be afraid to get on your knees and take out that macro lens... the results can be really cool, especially if you use these shots for building the menu.

In most cases the results would be better using a good macro over a standard focal lens due to sharpness and finer DOF control. Another GREAT lens and I believe a MUST HAVE lens for high quality food photography work is the DA10~17mm...

Thank you for all of your compliments and feedback, it is appreciated. A few clarifying notes.

Joe. Penn, the photos were shot with the 120 macro on the 645D between F19 and F29. Remember that DOF is very different on medium format than FF 35 or APC-S. The high resolution images at 100% are stunning.

TigerLord, I like the angled bird's eye view as well, it was necessary because the existing background was a dark purple curtain, The angle kept it out of the shots. I find it a lot easier to raise the shooting platform than getting down on the ground. Believe me that would not be a pretty sight. If this was an assignment we would have built a set and done a lot more prep and had a food stylist, alas, it wasn't.

The honeycomb grid is a wonderful tool. I hadn't really thought about it. Thanks for the suggestion I'm going to see if ProPhoto makes one for the soft box I use. If not I can fashion something out of black foam core I suppose.

I bet, the 645D produces stunning results (not from my experience as I do not have one but from all of the snaps I have seen from it). Great work !
