"...Just never heard of Pentax..." ??? ...some people's kids... How 'bout Contax or Leica then?

That buyer reminds me of when I was shopping for cloths for Africa, and I told the High School girl checking me out I was going to Tanzania. Just a weak smile and a nod of the head slowly left and right in a "I don't know where that is". I said, "you know, Mt. Kilimanjaro" ... still nothing. Really? I distinctly remember learning that 3 decades earlier in school!

I worked for a short while driving trucks and training new drivers in the US and it was beyond disturbing to learn that a basic knowledge of US geography....nevermind the world....is something that has disappeared in a single generation. Guys had no idea what state we were in, what states bordered it, what direction you had to go, whether something was a state or a city. You name it and they didn't know it. It brings to mind the several years old news report about 75% of Americans having definite ideas about what to do about Iraq but only 25% being able to point it out on a map. The sad truth is that geographical knowledge is no better within America's own borders.

I am absolutely flabbergasted to hear Americans actually talking about other Americans' lack of geographical knowledge - it is usually the rest of the world which make such remarks and I had always just ignored it.

JC

although we are somewhat drifting off topic. Lack of what goes on outside US boarders is promoted at all levels in the US. Just look at a weather forcast on TV. Even storm systems simply stop existing north of the US/Canada boarder.

That may be true in the central part of the country but not my experience in the East. I watch the Boston TV stations all the time for incoming weather systems (we often get the same weather a day later) and they always show and discuss the Maritimes in their weather newscasts. Plus I've travelled there many times and this geographic thing is a bit more an 'urban myth'. I think one should be careful of these types of comments as it certainly doesn't apply to many.

Yep, pretty sad that people (native English speakers) can not spell "aperture", "lens" and multitude of other words.

Nor can they tell the difference or proper use of "then" and "than", and particularly "your" and "you're" (and "their", "there" and "they're".)

And "ensure" instead of "insure".

The sudden explosion of people who no longer distinguish between "lose" and "loose" is a mystery to me.
