Are there any great suggestions for indoor lighting when taking family pictures, not formal poses?

Well, what do you have available? I think the answer will depend on what you can control. Having of-camera flash will be a different game than moving lamps or using available light.

The question is pretty vague. There are dozens of possible ways to light. For informal shots, either available light or using a light modifier on a flash will try your subject's patience the least, or if the conditions are right, using bounce flash. Just try not to shoot unmodified flash straight at your subjects.
