Good deal, Bruce. The FSA had some great work. Review, let it sink in and learn. There are number of books out there. And many of the photographers associated with that outfit (Dorothea Lange, Gordon Parks, and Walker Evans, among many others) offered a lot later in the century.
Right on, Thanks, Jools. I just ordered The Likes of Us and The Standard Oil Project through our library system. Really looking forward to them and the history as well as the photos.

A couple of other art books to throw out there are two I picked up today by John Fielder. A Colorado Winter and Along Colorado's Continental Divide Trail. Wonderful landscapes.

Here's another vote for "Light Science & Magic" and also for "The Photographer's Eye."

Light Science & Magic is an amazing book. If you enjoy the strobist website, it's a must-read. It offers very practical advice while also teaching how to understand lighting at a fundamental level. Great advice on shooting metal or glass.

The Photographer's Eye is an excellent book about composition. It can definitely help you improve your photos. Especially if you're just starting out.

Like Jools, "I happen to have learned a lot and still refresh with more often than not, is the Time-Life Series on Photography." I think I learned a lot from "The Zone System Manual," too. And "The Family of Man."

Well I once had the Zone System Manual but somehow lost it. I have found it hard to find nowadays. Very good workbook if you enjoy the Zone System.
And of course, the Family of Man is a definite keeper if you enjoy photographic history and can gleam from it.
Very nice additions to this list, jford.

Lots of great recommendations. I'm a fan of Bryan Peterson's work myself. Many of his books are augmented with video and his style and ease come through the video well.
