The passing of Herbert Keppler, 1925-2008

Herbert Keppler, just passed away. for many older shooters and avid readers of PopPhoto, he will be missed. His style of not searching for the newest, latest and greatest toy was a refreshing read from all the technobabble that often pervades these magazines. I for one will miss his hands on approach and "back to basics" style of discussion in the photo world.

Condolences to his family, friends and the staff of PopPhoto. He'll be missed.

Oh bad news indeed. I grew up reading his articles. You couldn't help but feel some sort of relationship with the man. He was a calm gentle voice amongst the maelstrom and eddy pools of the times. And yet, he was always bang on with his views and his praise. I will deeply miss his articles each month.

He will be missed greatly. Always had interesting ideas and things to say. He liked the less traveled path. His column was the first I looked at when a new magazine arrived. Not even sure I will read the mag now. We have lost a great Pentaxian.
thanks

I had the pleasure of working with Herb for a few years when he was with Modern Photography (then part of ABC Publishing). Although I was more on the corporate side of things as opposed to working for the magazine, I had many discussions with Herb about various photo related subjects. He was always gracious in explaining something to someone who knew very little and was a very pleasant person to know and deal with. He also had some pretty funny stories about his experiences in WWII; I think he skippered an LST in the Pacific. I have some nice memories of him.

Note: I just read the article which mentioned that it was an LCS, not an LST; so much for my memory.

Back when I had hair - I subscribed to Modern Photography (he moved to PopPhoto in the late 80's - after I had mostly given up on photography) mainly for his column. He was one of the most highly regarded photography writers around.

Yeah - he will be missed - a lot.

Damn. I'm very new to photography and only learned of him in the last year through a PopPhoto sub I got as a gift, but like you all have said, his was always one of the most informative parts of the mag. A real loss.

I hope they reprint his work in a series of books. I'd add them to my collection.
