I have lived at the same place for 9 years and just saw my first bats. A pair having fun around a singularly tall tree.
My home is smack inside Hong Kong harbour, and there is enough background light pollution so the bats are easily seen with the naked eye. I'm a fair bit off being "Rear Window", but I really enjoy the view and don't miss much. It's quite a treat to see bats here.
For a moment I considered trying to look at them with my Canon 10x42 L IS binoculars, as they are like having futuristic NASA tracking equipment in hand.
Got me thinking that BIF photography is hard enough, black cat photography has its own challenges, imagine the day when you combine them into Bat In Flight (with great detail and texture) becomes achievable.
Some might say it's all about photons. I'll say it's all about electronics. I remember a smart fellow telling me at CeBIT in the mid-90's that a Pentium 5 133MHz laptop was as fast as could be made, due to heat issues....
We haven't advanced by looking at a wall and walking away from it. Roll on the future where little kids can take bats in flight photos from their teleporters.
