Have a photography assignment, care to help me out?

So yeah, I was on assignment with the rest of my digital photography class and I snapped this image... but I don't remember which item I snapped it for.

It has to be either:
  • Shape as primary design
  • Good figure-ground relationship
  • Poor figure-ground relationship
  • Form as primary design
Keep in mind, I framed this shot specifically so that the tree branch was coming out of her neck, so it would meet one of the above categories. What do you think?

Sorry! I know you are learning and I am not entirely answering your question:

However, even though the background is nicely defocused, the shadow on the face overshadows any point you were trying to make...It is also hard to pull off humor in photographs if it looks staged. But this is just my personal opinion.

Oi vey. Well, thanks for that - at least. You're right in that it does not answer my original question but it might help me frame shots in the future.

I am assuming that you took a shot for each of the above categories?
Therefore you should have a shot for each? Set them out side-by-side and see which fits the description best. I would say the "good figure-ground relationship" could be ruled out as the subject has been isolated from the rest of the image. Just my thoughts anyway.

Interesting you choose a piece of wood to come out of her head. I prefer the light standards in parking lots with two lights on them. It makes the subject look like an alien.

Sorry I retract my previous statement, I am probably wrong after some further reading:
Core theory - Composition

I fear I do not. I'm an engineer with no education in the field of arts. Someone else would be more qualified to answer this question, I kind of jumped in without thinking.

Try poor figure ground relationship, and as a former photo teacher, next time, try and get a better image. Your teacher will mark you first with your knowledge of the concept as displayed by the image, but if he's like me, you still have to produce an excellent image to get an excellent mark. You need to prove that you can accept the limitations of the assignment, and still produce an interesting and engaging image.

I am with poor figure ground relationship, out of those choices. I am saying this because there is no figure ground relationship in that picture. The background is completely blurred, we don't see the ground, and with the subject in front of the tree the tree is floating.

If you want to get a good grade, I would recommend going back out and shooting whichever category(ies) you don't have clear examples from. So look at what you've got, match up the easy ones and reshoot the rest. I know it is more work, but it will pay off in the end.
