I do not organize my photos. They all go into one folder. If I need to find something, lightroom lets me search via the date, camera, lens, or keywords added to the batch of photos on import (in reality I don't bother with this last option!)

Lightroom and tagging... If I do a shoot for someone then I will put it in its own collection.

For the most part I use Lightroom to organize my photos. My file structure consists of photos sorted by year and month.

For the last few years I've been using Aperture Libraries by year then subject matter. I still have a mass of older photos that are languishing on hard drives waiting to "get organized" though. Life is much easier when you adopt a system and then make it happen for retrieving, viewing and showing your photos. I also like Zenfolio for access "anytime-anyplace" say when I am visiting and don't have my own computer, but can bring up the photos on any computer, tablet or smartphone that is available. Can also be used to send links to photos to distant friends and relatives, and makes for a good backup. Good luck with your decision - so many options!

I always recommend an easy two step process:

Step one: read "The DAM Book" by Peter Krogh
Step two: do virtually everything he says

I stick everything in a pile and every few months, I go through and pick out the best ones. The rest get tossed away in the archives. There's seldom enough good ones to really justify organizing.

All file names start with "yymmdd". A shoot gets filed in a folder that is named "yymmdd description". Tags in Elements. Elements can also search on exif.

I first load them with Picasa which organizes them by sequence in folders with yyyymmdd names.

In Lightroom. Each wedding gets its own catalog. Engagements by year is a catalog and then each engagement is further broken down by couple in collections. Portrait sessions (high school seniors, family, corporate) by year is in another catalog and then broken into collections by shoot. Personal by year is where everything else goes and it is it's own catalog with months as collections.

I always organize by date: year/month/day. Because it's easy to do automatically and always well organized. Then you can use tags to search the pictures by event or category instead of date in your favorite software. I should do that but for the moment I barely look at "old" pictures, and when I do I always remember the date approximately .

Ok Marc, bought the book (2nd Ed), had breakfast, now gonna get started on it, you never know I might be able to find stuff again.

Got a new iMac on route would be good to get it right for this.
