Stacking resolution

Hello!!
Yesterday I was reading a thread about this topic, but I really didn't understand how does it works. I already know stacking focus, bit not this one.
If I'm not wrong, the idea is to shoot many images of the same subject with the same settings and then merge them together.
What I really don't understand is how is it possible that this increase resolution. Can you help me please? (also with some theory if needed)
Thank you very much!!

Superresolution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's called super-resolution, when you intend to use stacking to increase resolution.

Superresolution FAQ

Some more info above - Photoacute software can create super-resolution images.
