It's popular because people are both lazy and casual about creating good photography. People are also ignorant about how to achieve the best imagery. Also, some people think retro looking photos are "in" or the "cool" thing. Some teenagers would fall into all of those categories of people.

In the same way twitter is popular with comedians or novelists - you can reach more people with less effort.

A lot of girls at my school try to be nerds by using Instagram and wearing unneeded non-prescription glasses. In my english class, I hear a girl constantly talking about Instagram and how "photography is her passion". I should turn around and ask what kind of camera she owns and what her shutter speed preference is. People claim photography is their passion, only use Instagram for iPhone. People claim they love art, can only draw anime. I can have discussions with my art teacher about photography, I remember discussing exposure time at one point. My point is, people make these claims way to fast. Photography isn't just about taking photographs.

Seems to me your issue is not with Instagram, but your classmates...

No, Facebook. Instagram "broke" their Twitter embedding feature last week.

Twitter offered $525 million dollars to buy Instagram before Facebook bought it for $1 billion.

I love/hate instagram. People that spam instagram on facebook ..... gawd .....

People I follow they post things I like, people I don't follow I hate what they post up lol.
I hate some of the stuff that people take pictures of, random crap and calling it amazing !!!!
Well can't blame instagram, because flickr, deviantart and other stuff has heaps of crap in there too. is just that instagram is catching up so quick in its short life time. lol

It's interesting because I can make a photo look retro without instagram or filters. I just take a picture of one of my LPs.

Well, its become instacrap overnight, if it wasn't already before:
Insta-rage as Instagram claims right to sell your photos

Actually, they have abided by similar terms for a long time. Their new terms just are more up front about claiming rights to your photos. Facebook has similar terms

I find it is just a fun thing to do with my phone camera, which is always handy. And I've seen some pretty great stuff that people are doing with Instagram, which says to me me that a good photograph has more to do with the mind that created it, and less to do with gear and software.
