Catch In Focus ... can't get it to work ?

Read my manual and additional old posts on CIF. It seems I'm doing everything right, but I cannot get the camera to fire ?

Using my K7 and Pentax A 135 manual focus lens @ f8 on Av.

-set CIF to ON position on custum setting menu
-focus on target area and set camera focus lever to AF.S
-press shutter release button fully

When I pass an object on the target area nothing happens. What am I doing wrong ?

Thanks for the help.

The focus hexagon momentarily flashes itself, but does not lit. The image in the viewfinder appears sharply focused.

The K7 body focus switch is set to AF-S.

Hold down the shutter release and slowly turn the focus ring. When the hexagon lights the shutter will trip. If the AF system doesn't think the focus is right it won't fire. The focus in the viewfinder probably isn't accurate with any lens faster than f3.5.

getting worse ...

Yikes ! now I can't even get the camera [COLOR="Red"][U]not to fire when I depress the exposure button.

Managed to keep the focus hexagon lit with a finer focusing effort.

I'm getting ready to pack it in and go watch some football.

You got excellent advice so far and you should use it.

*Use Centre point focus + AF

*Check that the green hexagon doed come on and stay on.

*If there is not enough light, CIF will not work. Then do switch off CIF and you should use MF.

The K-7 AF does not work too well in low light, but the camera operating in MF can allow you still some great shots.

Food for thoughts....

work in progress ...

Followed all the recommendations and rechecked camera settings, got the focus hexagon to stay lit, but still no luck.

I'm set up in our computer room with the lights on and it does seem bright enough but who knows ?

Maybe the problem is my interpretation of CIF. I thought if everything is set up properly, when an object comes into the focused field of view the camera will then take the exposure automatically. Am I correct in my thinking ?

I've been focusing my camera on a small statue and then moving my hand into the region of interest, hoping to hear a shutter go off.

Thanks all for your help. It's time for a beer and some football. I've got a long winter ahead of me to figure this out.

The release is "focus priority" - you still must depress the shutter button for it to fire.... It's just an interlock on focus confirmation.

You must hold the shutter button down while turning the focus ring, or moving the camera back and forth with center point on target. The green hexagon does not have to be lit.

It could be low light as mentioned. Try it outside in sunlight.

Just got it to work myself (was having the same issue)...

Trick is... it has to be a manual focus lens AND the camera has to be set to auto focus.

Then with the subject OOF, press the shutter button fully. The shutter should not fire. Then with it held down, manually focus. Once the focus confirmation sounds, the shutter should fire (if CIF is turned on in the menu).

Hope this helps.

Camera set to AF-S, lens set to MF (or use a manual lens). The lens must short the AF contacts (this means you cannot get CiF for all-plastic lenses without contacts or with a lens that is too narrow. You can work around this by adding a piece of conductive material in front of the contacts or use a flanged adapter) (also, you cannot CiF with the DAL lenses). Now go to menu and turn on CiF and then hold the shutter button while focusing (or while a subject enters the frame). The camera will fire automatically, if you have burst mode enabled, it will keep firing as long as focus is being confirmed. It will stop when you depress the shutter button. Lens must be a manual lens or have a MF switch.

I found when I thied it if the object was moving too fast my K7 would not fire so I slowed the object down and it worked.
