Buying equipment in Nepal

Within a month I'll be travelling to Nepal, a friend of mine wants me to buy some glass or even a DSLR in Kathmandu.
Is it a wise thing to do ? I know there can be problems with warranty.

I've been in Nepal several times and stayed in Kathmandu, I've never seen 'reliable' stores for photographics.
Any suggestions ?

Nepal, I'm friends with several Tibetan refugees who frequently visit Nepal, so I called a couple up with your question. They recommended against buying cameras and lenses there, citing high prices for "real" brand-name gear, and a great many pirated copies made in China that are of poor quality.
