polarizers and wide angles

For film, my landscape wide zoom was a 24-50. I used a polarizer quite often, and had the occasional problem at the widest with uneven sky. My possible wide zoom for digital is the da 12-24, which will probably be even worse. While using a polarizer to reduce a scenes contrast is great, does anyone find that post processing gives better results? For less than the price of a high quality 77mm CLP, you can get a good HDR program.

The HDR won't emphasize the skies the way a polarizer will. To create a similar effect to HDR, one needs a Graduated Neutral Density filter to darken the sky while still exposing the land properly. A polarizer almost does this here, but the wider you go, the more pronounced the colour density shift in the sky from side to side - or worse, both sides to the center. I have a 77 mm Polarizer for the 16-50 and it will fit the 12-24, but somehow I think it won't get too much use on the 12-24 because of the wide sky exposures.

I often get that dark sky effect with the 12-24 without a filter - don't much care for that.

It doesn't even take a lens that wide. Here's the kit lens at 18mm:

methinks you need square filters, such as the COKIN Creative System - Filter A:P/Z/X - Filter Kits

will a HDR program help you take a picture thru a window, or see though water, showing detail on surfaces suffering from glare, etc... nope. A polarizer has many abilities a computer can't replicate. For just darkening skys, then a Graduated ND filter or your HDR program might be the better option.

I agree thee, even at 18mm you don't get evenly polarized sky at all times, I can't say, I particulary like that effect, and for that reason I didn't even bother to check 77mm CPL for my Sigma 10-20
