Single portraits, the 70-200 is quite versatile. The 43 is excellent and less intimidating but you have to shoot up close.

Couple or small group portraits would be good with either the 31 or 43. Lighting and good complementary background make the portrait come to life.

FA77 on K-5 IIs in manual. Simple bounce flash (Metz 58 AF-1, auto mode), aimed 45º backwards, mounted on the camera. Not studio conditions, just a friend's house before my daughter's formal. You could get very similar results with your FA43 standing a little closer.

Good advice above, however, I stop down to around f8 for studio portraits, which is what I see most pros do. Most lenses are at their best and sharpest 2-3 stops from wide open. Of course, if you are not in the studio and you want to isolate the subject from the background, you would choose a larger aperture to blur the background.

I spent many hours watching Youtube videos on "portraits" and "photography lighting", so I'd suggest that you look at some of those to get you started. There are also some online training sites that offer very good courses on photography and all of the different techniques and styles. I've been pleased with Kelby so far.
Nice work there!

I hope you're making a living out of shots like that. Exquisite on every level.

Should be "it dawned on me", dawn being the sunrise and light illuminating a new idea. Any modern kit lens can be used to make a good portrait. Its not the gear, its you.

The last few posts show images that are way over my head, in the technical sense !

I asked for "samples" but I sure wasn't expecting pro-grade images.

Nonetheless, it would be nice to see the parameters used, just as the pictures are great, just as the technical info is missing; and that will not help me much.

I have done a few shots: not to be shown because of total embarrassment. There will be some showing here soon, hopefully.

In the mean time: a BIG thanks to everyone contributing.

Cheers!

Though it isn't specifically focused on portraiture, the Sample Image thread offers several shots with technical info on each shot posted. You can select the type of camera, and lens used to show you what others have done with your equipment. You can check out other lenses as well to see if you'd like to try one out in the future.

Maybe one day they could add a filter to the search for the type of shot you are wanting to see as well, like Portraiture, Landscape, Macro, etc. Don't know how hard it would be to implement, but it would be very useful.
