I guess if you want them that way, fine. A family member had someone do their wedding photos, and looking at the results it was obvious what the photographer was trying to do. Make this normal plain young woman look beautiful. And she did. Quite amazing. She managed to get her eyes laughing, the technique was impeccable.
When I shoot wildlife I want to portray the wonder that I felt when I was there. That is the point of my shots, and sometimes I manage.
Many of my shots are simply a record of what I saw. That is the point of them. Usually there isn't much else of interest to them.
I honestly think that this question is what is lacking in many of my shots. The point can be over the top, simple, subtle, maybe a texture or color that catches your eye. I want to do landscapes, and have many of just another mountain or colorful sky not worth looking at twice, and what is lacking is exactly this, a point.
A photo should say at the least 'look at me'.
