Originally posted by vonBaloney "Lens whacking" appears to be the term video filmmakers are using for what still photographers have called "freelensing" or sometimes "freehanding" for quite a while, and all it is...is not mounting the lens, but holding it in your hand in the mount or just slightly outside the mount on the body to purposely let in light leaks or so you can use it like a tilt/shift lens (very imprecisely). Often you would use a lens with a different mount than your camera, possible something smaller so you could have some freedom of movement in terms of placing it partially in the body without it getting hung up, etc. So you're just creating artsy effects by holding the lens in the hand and moving it around, but still held more or less inside or just outside the body of the camera. It is easier to do on bigger formats, or with lenses that don't match the format of the body you're using...
Thanks for the explanation.
It sounds like something I might like to try. I can imagine the effects would surely lead to some varied and interesting effects.
Another member here, a nice young man, scratchpaddy, has done something like this and posted the results here. The pictures he got from the experiments were very unique. Some had the look of what you might get using a large format camera.
