Teleconverter as suedo ND filter

I am taking a vacation in a couple weeks and i have been reading a lot about using ND filters to make people disappear in your images (quite useful for those popular tourist areas). I'm about to pull the trigger on a B+W 10-stop filter but it got me thinking about an old teleconverter i have in my closest. If i am not mistaking teleconverters douple your f-stop, so if im shooting at f8 with a 2x teleconverter than bam, 8 stops of light reduction correct? Has anyone used a teleconverter to achieve the same effects of an ND filter?

It is 2 stops for a 2x teleconverter, instead of f8 it would be f16.

The Hoya ND400 is another nice one to consider.

I have pretty much decided on a (B+W ND 3.0-1,000X Single Coating) and a (Marumi DHG ND8 Multi-Coated) so i have something at f10 and f3. I looked at the Hoya but it seemed to have more mixed reviews than these two listed here. One review said the Hoya is hard to clean, idk its so hard making a decision based off of reviews alone..

Ill be getting both in a 77mm and use step up rings for my lenses..

Oh, well I have never had to clean mine, I like the hoya for the lack of a color cast on my final images. I know its stupid and can easily be fixed in PP but if I dont have to adjust something I would rather not. B + W make great filters but I have heard the ND filters leave a color cast. I have a couple of cokin ND filters that I am not fond of because of color casting but they work in a pinch.

Have you looked at Lee's Big Stoppers too?

If you have a polarizing (PL) filter--buy a second one and you have an adjustable ND. Provides about 3 stops to essentially no light transmission. Not a cheaper alternative--unless you use linear PL as I do--as good used linear PL's can be gotten cheap now.

And then there is averaging a series of photos to remove the moving bodies. No filter needed and they can be shot without a tripod.

Apart from light loss, there can also be some IQ loss, unless of course your using some of the more expensive varieties.
