The place to discuss macro and close-up photography

Macro photography is popular among hundreds of our members: it's easy to learn but hard to master.

So, by popular request here's a forum section dedicated to macro, close-up, and extreme macro topics. Enjoy!

Great idea, I'll start with a question. What is the advantage of having e.g. A 100mm Macro lens versus a normal 100m lens and an extension tube? Do dedicated macro lenses have some other unique quality apart from close focus? I've heard stuff about focal planes and that they are sharper. Is that correct?

Just a question that has nagged at me about why to spend top dollar on a macro lens versus a few quid for some tubes that turn any lens into macro.

I've always heard the dedicated macros are sharper, something about flat field and such. All I know is my Pentax 100mm f4 macro is extremely sharp and I can do some big crops and still have a sharp and detailed image. I also have the 50 f4 macro that I mostly use with tubes, and it is just as sharp. These two are older M series lenses and can be found fairly cheap compared the newer macros.

I have a ATamron 90mm f 2.8 macro.. When pixel peaking it is the sharpest lens I have.

Right, typically a non-macro lens will have more field curvature than a macro lens. This doesn't really matter unless you are shooting flat objects (coins, stamps, etc.) or duplicating slides. Macro lenses are also typically optimized for close focus (no surprise there) whereas non-macro lenses tend to be sharper at longer focus distances.
