Reversing a lens

I don't have a K-mount reversing adapter, but I do have a 49mm coupling ring. I tried reversing my 50 1.7 onto my 50 f4 macro, also tried it other way around, also tried reversing both onto my 100 f4 macro. All combinations gave me bad vignetting. I wonder if this is caused by the 100 and 50 macro having a recessed lens. These are the only 49mm lens I have so can't test anything else.

I have never tried reverse coupled lens for macros other than holding a reversed lens in front of another just to see if it works.

I would suspect it is because you are using a macro lens to begin with. These have different optical formulas to allow them to focus closer than "regular" lenses of the same focal length.

Do you have non-macro lenses (zooms can be used) you can try? Are both lenses set to infinity? What if only one or the other is set to infinity?

I tried it all different ways with the same results. The only non-macro lens I tried was the 50 f1.7, but I tried it with both of the macros. Don't have another 49mm lens.

Did you remember to remove all filters from the lenses?

You should tell us which lens(es) you're stopping down. In general, stacked lens reversal tends to work better when you stop down the reversed lens, rather than the primary. Reversing a 50 on a 50 is also not a particularly great idea, as it will only give 1:1 macro in any case. I don't have a 100 F/4 Macro to try, but I have reversed lenses on top of my Tamron 90 Macro as well as my Pentax-M 135mm, 150mm and 200mm. You can read about some of my observations and results in this thread.

Just from the combinations I've tried, I think the primary lens needs to be a telephoto or the combo will vignette. You're probably right about the 100mm macro, though -- the recessed front element a problem. But make sure you leave the primary wide open, as Doundounba suggests.

Both the 100 and 50 f4 macros have deeply recessed front lens. I think that is the problem. But I'm going to try some of the suggestions made. I think I tried the 50-A f1.7 on the 100 macro using the 50 to stop down, and still had the problem.
