How a photographer coaxed a kingfisher to pose for the camera

QuoteQuote:
Perched in a tree by the side of the pool, the kingfisher's beady eye is focused on just one thing - her lunch.

In a blinding flash of cobalt-blue and orange-chestnut she launches herself like a torpedo into the water to seize one of the minnows that are swimming there.

Then she beats it against the side of her perch before swallowing it whole and turning her attention on the second course - another minnow.

In Argentina we have a saying "Más vale maña que fuerza" I think it translates as "brain over brawn"

That's amazing.... what a guy. The title though.. "like shooting fish in a barrel". They should have stopped to count the hours this guy put into this, it was nothing like shooting fish in a barrel. It's more like devoting all your spare time to getting fantastic images. And sticking with it until you got what you wanted.

Ive seen a similar rig years ago by a local photographer.:
Vodomec - kralj ribi (2009)

But he had stones and plants in the aquarium - a recreation of the habitat of the bird.

And other photographers did this even earlier:
Martín Pescador, alta...: Photo by Photographer Angel Pulido Domínguez - photo.net

We should probably add those photos of photographers holding a bird by the neck to take closeup photos With the aquarium setup, the bird stays free, gets a lunch, and avoids trauma

And his creativity. Its good to see a photographer who can think outside the box (or aquarium in this case).

Oh I didn't mean to put down his work - the photos look great and they clearly required a lot of gear, work and skill

I can only imagine how much prep time and wait time he's endured to get the perfect photos with that setup.
