I miss football. I played for near 30 years 10 years tackle, 20 years touch and flag, and coached for a year before moving on to coaching basketball. Thanks for posting, I can smell the pads.

Thank you. I enjoy shooting football, especially in the early part of the season when there is more light. I shoot for our high school website (which I manage) so I have the freedom to post what I want. I was talking with the photog from the local paper and he was saying that the paper has told them to limit the number of action shots to 10 with the rest (usually 35-50) of the crowd, cheerleaders, band, coaches reactions, etc. I was looking at the shots this morning from the paper website and noticed that the freelance photographers had 10 or so action shots but the staff photographer had about half action shots.

Anyway, here are a few more from the evening. I'm hoping to shoot some with the Bigma this Friday since it is a home game and I can bring in more equipment. This was my first football game with the K1. I bought it after last season and used it for basketball. I also use my K3 for wide shots and closeup shots of the crowd or cheerleaders. The full gallery is here.

The QB had nowhere to go on this play.

After a score the ensuing kickoff was returned for an apparent TD but a holding penalty called it back. The same player, #11, caught a TD pass on the resulting series and also pulled in a pass for the 2 point conversion. This is a shot of the kickoff return.

I love being able to try different angles. I got this shot on a drive that resulted in a TD but didn't get a shot of the score since the referee was right in front of me.

Eeeeew!
Stuck in a poorly vented locker in a basement room and never dried out between August and November. I remember--but not fondly

I carried mine home. 1.5 miles, in rain and snow, uphill both ways. MY first helmet was leather. Most others did have plastic helmets, but my dad was really cheap. The leather helmet lead the only nickname I ever had that lasted more than a few minutes, 'Crazy Legs Head" named after Crazy Legs Hirsch.

I keep telling people that, but it doesn't sink in.

At what age do Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts start helping you across the street?

Do they still do that or did we miss out?

We had our first football game of the year so I took my Bigma. I was able to use it during the first quarter or so while there was still plenty of sunlight.

Oklahoma City University vs Bethany College, Aug 2018

A Bethany College player has a golden scoring opportunity as he flies towards the OCU goalie at top speed.

Photo taken with a 40-year-old manual focus lens… who needs autofocus anyway?

ricfam's soccer kick shot reminds me of a shot I posted in this thread back in 2014. Here's are reworked version. It was slightly OOF but I've managed to improve it with FocusMagic. This U13 player impressed me with his athleticism. (Open the image in a new tab and view at 100% to see the intended level of sharpening.)

A flying junior soccer kick. K3 + DA* 60-250/F4 @250mm FL, 1/1000s, f/7.1, ISO500.

Dan.

first football scrimmage of the year

Its been quite some time since I've posted, lots of summer and school activities and work or course. Its wearing me out.

I have a new setup this year moving from the K-3ii/DA*200 to the K-1ii/DA*300/DA*200 and K-1/DFA15-30. I'm liking it so far. The focusing on this setup took a bit of getting used to and not sure if it is the lens or camera difference. Result once getting used to it is a good keeper rate. I love this time of football season that you aren't constrained by stadium lighting. Also like the golden color the setting sun adds.

I like the giant ref and how all the other refs heads are aimed up to look at him...he was probably 6'7" or so. I also like the bearded coach pic it was probably my favorite of the set.

tele action from scrimmage 2

the DA*300 has nonoticeable chromatic aberration as does the DA*200, that's nice to not have toadjust.

Season Opener

Other than gear, I've also changed my technique to using manual mode. Usually exposing for between the shadows and highlights, but sometimes leaning to one direction or the other if i want to take advantage of a light differential. It has more than cut my post processing effort in half and I can apply the same adjustments across the board.
