It is also one of the most famous waves in the world, strictly for experts only.

10 foot waves, afternoon of 21 October 2013. K5 + Kenko 1.5 TC ++ 50-135 on loose ball head. My idea of vacation. I'd like to return in winter with my Sigma 100-300/4 and 30 foot waves.
Breathtaking! I'd love to have been there (watching not on a board).

I've already hit the 3 image limit, but this is a picture of the most important piece of gear for sports photography at paid attendance events. This thread is in the Technique section, and I would like to point out that understanding the sport you are photographing to know what point in time to trip the shutter, is the most important technique and the second most important technique is to be able to anticipate what camera settings will work best once that point in time arrives. In a different thread Brooke Meyer wrote about the preparation and practice involved in photographing a ballet, well think of sports as unscripted, competitive dance.

Sir, technically that's a sport, though practically it's an excuse to go to a pub and drink beer after the formalities.
