Kite-Surfing

There's this stretch of beach in Quintana Roo, Mexico I love to walk with a long lens, shooting birds & other wildlife. This year the end near the parking lot was alive with kite surfers. I took a bunch of shots with the K-3, 1.4x TC and DA*300/4. The "airborne" shot isn't good at all but it just had to be included in the sequence.

pre-game warm-up portraiture

I was happy when we arrived find the gym with nice lighting both quantity and quality. These are taken with the DA*200 on a K-1. I just started this combination for pre-game, half-time and crowd shots -- fun stuff!

btw My setup for the in game action is the DA50 1.8 on the K-3ii or K-5iis -- which works out pretty well. I learned late in this season to disable SR. I try to shoot at least 1/500, so it isn't needed anyway. I think I've been taking shots while SR was still trying to stabilize. Pretty sure when this is the case the pictures are a little soft. I think I've noticed better sharpness since disabling SR for in game shots, but will need to wait until next football/basketball season now to see. The below were with SR on and they seem a little soft, so looking forward to another action outing to try this out.

Spring Football

I recently purchased a Rokinon 85mm f/1.4, primarily to use in photographing night sports on dimly lit fields. I tried it out on a local team's Spring football game and it worked great, as you can see from the attached photos.

The Rokinon is a superb manual focus lens, so I had no trouble getting good action shots. I should note, however, that I spent 20 years photographing sports with manual focus lenses back in the film era, so manual focusing is a skill that I mastered long ago.

This receiver clenches his fists in frustration after missing a wide-open pass. I had to ignore the ball, which seems to be coming directly towards me after deflecting off of his hands, to get this shot (the ball missed me, barely).

A Perfect Block

Bethany College vs Sterling College, Feb 2018

This was a great defensive effort to cleanly block a fast break layup from behind. The players involved are two of the top guards in their conference, which makes the photo even more special.

More Soccer

The weather finally warmed up a but and felt more like spring this week. Our girls' soccer team had a big match Thursday at home. They have never beaten this team and lost 2-0 on their field a few weeks back. There was plenty of light so I pulled out the Bigma to use with my K1.

I did manage to get a shot of the first goal.

We went on to win the match 4-2.

The K-7 with the DA*300/4 and a 2x converter from 2011. Came across this image and thought it worth sharing, odd composition and all.
