How Many Clicks Is Too Many?

Often when cameras are sold here it is with the statement that "only 3,000 clicks" were made or some other low number. Me, I've made 10,000 shots in my first four months. Is this a lot or something? Do I need to worry about the camera wearing out? Or are some people just very very picky about how new their used gear is?

It's merely an indication of the condition of the shutter, since they have a limited lifespan.

In any case, most photographers will never even come close to reaching the limit before they change their camera.

I just found this database of clicks for different camera models. Not sure how useful it is, but there you go.

Pretty small sample sizes. I just clicked on what would have been mine second choice camera (D70). Data is obviously skewed big time.

nikon d70 | Camera Shutter Life | Database
Average number of actuations after which shutter is still alive: 35,422.3
Average number of actuations after which shutter died: 46,860.1

pentax k10d | Camera Shutter Life | Database
Average number of actuations after which shutter is still alive: 277,488.3
Average number of actuations after which shutter died: 772,905.8

My D2H shutter died at 9800 clicks.

My D1 was bought used with an estimate of 50-60K on it and still going strong

thats something i've been wondering about too...
why does a shutter stop working?
how expensive is it to replace/repair it?

IIRC most cheaper DSLR's are spec'd for 50k clicks MTBF the pro models double that.

I've exceeded 50k clicks on my K10D and have no issues. It works perfectly.

Download PhotoMe and view your latest picture with it and it'll tell you how many actuations as of that picture.

Yes, your image number in the file name. It counts up from 0 when you buy it.

actually mine start from 0 every time
maybe windows renames them after i have imported images to comp

you have to open RAW file, JPGs don't hold that information. And I'm not sure where exactly but it is there under: shutter actuations...
