Tips for shooting Space Shuttle launch tomorrow.

I will be watching the Discovery shuttle launch tomorrow at 5:00pm. I'm sure someone on the forums have shot the shuttle launch before and I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations on settings, modes, etc. I will be using a K200D with the kit lens. I will be about 12 miles away so I know I won't be getting any Pulitzer winning shots, but I still want to record the event. This will probably be my only chance to see a launch before they quit flying the shuttle.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

At a distance of 12 miles, I don't think you'll have to worry about the bright glow of the rocket engines affecting your exposure, so I would just set the camera to aperture priority, and shoot.

At that distance you'll be shooting at infinity, so I'd say f5.6 or f8.0 would be a good aperture to shoot at, since depth-of-field wouldn't be a concern.

If it's clear enough, a horizontal shot of the shuttle in the upper right of the frame with the rocket exhaust trailing to the lower left would look good, I think.

No, I've never shot the space shuttle; just trying to offer a few ideas.

Good luck, and post your results.

Here's a link to a fairly recent post regarding the Space Shuttle: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-your-photos/23084-night-launch-space-shuttle.html
