Absolutely. About the only time I have used on-camera popup flash to my satisfaction was as fill or as a controller for off-camera flash. External flash been near essential to any flash result which I can be proud of. If the flash is on the camera, learn to bounce it.
For a new user, spend a little money and get a flash that also works in wireless-P-TTL, and get it off the camera. Granted, many of us old-timers use our flashes in manual mode, but the easiest way to go for a beginner is to set the flash as a wireless slave and the camera as a master or controller, and shoot. All the information is transmitted and the exposure is calculated by the camera and flash.
