Birthday Party for 1 year old boy. (sounds good so far doesn't it)

Well a friend called me today to see if I would want to take pictures of her youngest sons birthday party Sunday. So I said sure I have my new flash coming on Friday so I can play with it on Saturday to get used to it. Then I ask the question "where is it at and when should I be there". I am told around noon would be fine and it is at "Hooters". Now.......I know I'm an old fart that should probably be put out to pasture for my way of thinking. But WHAT THE HELL are they thinking!!!! But that is another post. What I'm wondering is noon on Sunday I'm thinking it is going to be packed in there and I don't really want to take the majority of my stuff. I'm thinking my camera, flash and some kind of lens. I'm thinking maybe my 28mm to90 mm should do fine. What do you all thnk? And of course a bunch of business cards.

thanks
Jim

I think you should take test shots of the waitresses to make sure your exposure and white balance are correct.

Having a 1 year olds birthday party at Hooters aside....

If you're planning to use one of your digital bodies, I'd want a wider zoom, something that's in the 16-18mm range at the wide end, but if your going to use the ZX-5, the 28-80 would be just fine. Since you have a couple of days you might also want to look into buying/making a diffuser for the flash. Direct, on-camera flash is just nasty (IMHO).

Yes. Lots of test shots. Post them here for C&C.

I am sorry folks. I will be using my K10D with either the Pentax 360 or the 540. I have finally got my cactus wireless working, but that was about 15 minutes ago so that will be staying at home. I have seen many many diagrams of homemade diffusers but has anyone made one that they used and really liked it, plus I'm looking for one that doesn't take up a lot of room. The widest lens I have is a 28mm but I thought that would be too wide if I wanted some close-up shots.

I'd take the 31mm ltd, if I had one.

Why use you digital bodies? Maybe some waitresses have "digital" bodies...

Thanks for all the replies to this thread. I don't have a 31mm limited. I do have the 28-90mm and a 28mm and a 50mm. I was thinking the 28-90mm would be best since I could do a wide shot, then zoom in a little for closeups.

Thanks
Jim

28mm will not be that wide with 1.5x factor. You can also borrow the kit lens from a friend (if somebody near you have one). That lens is a good performer, lightweight and goes down to 18mm.

RE: Party at hooters: Come on folks... a 1 year old is too young to know anything about the "environment" of a restaurant like Hooters... Lets be honest here... the party is really for the parents, in reality they are probably celebrating the fact that their kid being less dependant on them they can finally restart having a life again after a year of "hard labour"

RE: Lens to use... I'd say go for the kit lens if you can borrow one, or else I guess the 28mm can still be adequate if you have to "work with what you got". Also lighting is usually dimmed in places like that and is often a mix of fluorescent lights and halogen spots... you'll need a flash, preferably diffused.
