RawShooter Essentials.

I had heard quite a bit about how some photog's were working very favorably with 'RawShooter' for their files. I just downloaded it, and found that it would recognize none of my files. I am presently working with Picasa - which is a nice program, but I am seeking for something a little better. Some time ago, I had tried 'Capture One', but it proved to be painfully slow, and a very recent research into user reviews of Adobe's 'Lightroom' yielded similar registered complaints. I was all set to purchase that program - tonight - but kind of side-lined that action due to the above. I haven't totally gotten away from it (Lightroom), though, because there just might be some other factors that might have played into those user's experiences. But I wish that I could have found a trial download for it.

But, back to this 'RawShooter: has anyone, here, played successfully with it?

Well, I just did away with 'RawShooter", and downloaded 'SillyPix Developer 3. I also found & downloaded 'LightRoom'. I guess that it is in the calculating nature of what these programs do, as to the reason why slowness is realized - and I am working on being more forgiving on that.

I am finding that I kind'a like both of the latter two mentioned programs a lot. One of the things that SillyPix has over LightRoom (IMO), is the greater visual real estate of a photo. There may be some way to achieve this in LightRoom, also, but I haven't (as yet) found it.

But I'll get into these programs, and should have a clearer sight into which of these I might like to spring for (providing there isn't another to crop up, and whisk my favor away from them).

Can't rember what you shot but RSE only worked pre K models. So unfortunitly if you own a K100 or K10 will not work. It was a great program I really like it. I am slightly partial to Silkpix. Just easier to use, but Bibble produces some nice picture quality. I am still trying the free version. You just need to find something that works for you. Good luck

I presume you use DS or DL? As far as I know RawShooter does not support K100D and K10D, even if used with DNG since it does not have proper implementation for DNG support (uses just image data from DNG ignoring embedded processing parameters). I use RawShooter with my DS with no problems and excellent results.

Since Adobe has acquired Pixmantec I presume Lightroom includes part of RawShooter engine which is good. The only thing is: LR is far from cheap! I would appreciate if Adobe releases "Lightroom Elements" with RAW processor only (that is, only "Develop" part) since I do not intend to use other features I don't feel like paying for something I am not going to use so I am sticking to RawShooter for now.

Thanks Pat. I guess that I am out of the running, then, with that program, because I have the K10D. Oh well...'just have to find myself another .

Thanks to you also, Ivan. Mine is the K10D, so I am definitely looking into something else, now. I also wish that LR didn't cost so much, and just may wait a minute. Another poster mentioned something to the effect of it (possibly) behooving one to wait until CS3 is released - to see what's to be incorporated with it.

Nathan,

This is from another post regarding a modified Rawshooter Essentials 2006. The mod worked like a charm with my k100 files. It's supposed to work with the k10 files also. Worth a go if you like Rawshooter:

Download the modified .exe file from here and copy it over your original:

Here's the mod. Just download it and replace the original executable:

Here's the forum link about the mod (a long thread but a good read):

Photodan,

Thanks for your attempt to help me out in this matter, but I either did something wrong with it - or that mod doesn't work for my K10. I replaced the original executable, and I do see the thumbnail of my raw files, at the top of the interface. But when I double-click on either of them, the result is a horizontally split-color work window (black & white). I really do appreciate your help, though.

I'll fool around with these other programs (Lightroom & SilkyPix) and see what catches my fancy.

Photodan, I am not as Computer literate as I thought. I have RSE and downloaded this thing then copied it to my Pixamantic file in the program files and them opened it. I could see the raw files from the K10 for a second then they all changed to a half black half white box. Not B&W picture but black strip and white stripe. these are PEF files but they were there for a second. Can you direct me to Idiots guide to making that work

Vievetrick, my knowledge of computers is limited but here's all I did (I couldn't view my raw images or thumbnails prior to this).

Downloaded RSE and installed normally, downloaded the mod, unzipped it and replaced the original "RawShooter.exe" file with this one.

Started the app with the new executable and the thumbnails and PEF images were there. As for why or how it worked - well - I honestly don't have a clue.

I will say, I see why so many folks were saddened when Rawshooter was sold to Adobe. Really a nice application. I've been playing with it and the Pentax Photo Lab and Rawshooter is my favorite.

Good luck
