Legitimate Technique? Pure Unadulterated Luck!

The Attached Photos were taken before the turn of the Century (1990) using K1000 - 125 Ektar (the best film ever produced by Kodak IMO) - 300mm - 2X telecom = 600mm snugged down tripod and Duluth Mn Airshow. Picked up the Aircraft in the distance and panned on them as they came in started shooting when it got interesting. Didn't know what I was getting until developed in those days of course. Can be photo-shopped I guess today. The photos are computer scanned quality the originals are 16" X 20" from Ektar 125 negatives 1/10 negative coverage

How do they fly So Close without bumping into each other? Ah! Attached to wires of course!

Heh, the power lines in the last photo pass right through the landing gear axles. It really does look like they are wire-guided.

I'll see the Air Force Thunderbirds next weekend. My photography task will be so much easier than film. Modern autofocus, optical stabilization while panning, instant feedback on the LCD, etc.

The amount of 'luck' you have is generally related to the amount of work, experience, skill and preparation you have. So, no I'm not buying the luck story.

You had the right gear, in the right spot, with the right film and camera settings and the skill and experience to pan with the aircraft and shoot when you should have. That's not luck.

Here's another taken from the GUN camera on my following chase SPITFIRE ( brand of lawn chair). Mustang breaking off Zero into death roll. Remember to snug down the tripod pick them up in the distance where they are smaller and easier to frame and then follow them in and start shooting when they get interesting. A piece of cake with todays tech.

The Blue Angels Pic with the landing gear (Hook & Wheels) touching the wires which were in the forground where I was standing could not be duplicated again with past ,present or future camera equipment in a Bazzillion attempts. Sometimes Ya gets lucky! Anybody else get lucky in the field and not in the Lab?
