The old 100 f4 macro

Even though it only does 1:2, the Pentax-M 100mm f4 macro is hard to beat. Even with heavy cropping you can get a nice shot.

I totally agree with bluestringer that this 100mm f/4 macro is a gem. I got one where the elements in front show signs of delamination. However, the quality of pictures seems unaffected. Here's one taken with the lens wide open.

I can only agree. This is the sharpest lens I ever owned, although even my copy has signs of front lens opacity (it seems to be quite common with this lens) and even if I don't shoot macro, I'll never sell it for any reason.

Two quick shots taken right now, at f/5.6 and f/8, ISO 800, no tripod, SOOC (K-5):

For the M series? Less than $200. Around $250-280 for the A series. There is also a 100mm macro for bellows that runs less than $200.

I bought mine, which had a slight haze in the front element, for CDN $60. I found this excellent deal through craigslist here in Vancouver. More recent ads show people wanting between $120 and $160 for a used copy. Various explanations have been offered for this haze including the deterioration of the balsam that holds together the two front elements. The lens I got showed very little use and the slight haze in front doesn't seem to affect its performance.

I find that this copy I have, in spite of the haze, easily holds its own against the SMCP A 50mm f/2.8 macro and the Takumar Macro f/4. In fact, I cannot distinguish the pictures taken with these three macros. With a cropped-sensor, it gives me the FOV of a 150mm lens, which is just excellent for my needs.

I got mine from KEH a couple of years ago for 90 dollars. It was rated as bargain, it has no visible defects that I can see. They have several on there now ranging from 119 for bargain to 175 for excellent.

If you want 1:1, take a look at the Vivitar 55mm 2.8 Macro. It can had for a good price. The working distance at 1:1 is really close, but it's a great lens.

Here's my most recent "keeper" with my trusty SMC Pentax Macro 1:4/100 f4-32, which I also use for tighter shots.
I love this lens!

I bought mine on ebay for about $75. Can't beat it for the money. Surprisingly capable lens.
