Hm, looks like I should start saving for either of those two lenses. I know the 55-300 is way cheaper, and should give me some good results. But I like the fact that the 50-135 has a constant f/2.8 aperture.

Decisions, decisions.

But for now, I'll get some good practice in with manual focus. I have a feeling, though, that I'll be at or close to infinity the whole time.

That's quite likely.

Also. For shooting good panning shots you don't really need a large aperture. The one I posted was I think f16 just because I used such a slow shutter. At 1/125 or 1/250 you'll still be in the f11-f8 range.

Again, dof doesn't matter much for this style of shot. If you wanted, you could slow the shutter a bit with a cpl or light nd.

A cpl may be beneficial for shooting cars anyway, i don't think it adds much for bikes, there is very little glare with them

However if you want a general use lens to double for track duty I can't recommend the 50-135 enough.

So, after seeing your picture wibbly and a bunch of others. I bit the bullet and rented the 50-135 and 1.4tc from LensRentals yesterday. It should be here today so I'm pretty excited. I'll definitely still be using the A70-210 as I absolutely love that lens. But the 50-135 will get it's use for sure.

Of course! Will post my favorite ones from the A70-210 in the thread. And I'll probably make an album for the rest of them. Thanks for all the help!

Just got back home from the event. Here are five of my favorite. I had ten keepers out of probably 40-50. So, I'd say not a bad start. Cars were probably ranging from 40-60 mph at this part of the track. All were taken in TAv mode.

And again, thanks everyone for the help! It was actually easier than I thought. I was at or just away from infinity the whole time.

1/100, f/16, ISO640

1/80, f/16, ISO200

1/80, f/16, ISO250

1/100, f/16, ISO640

And I saved my favorite for last. 1/100, f/16, ISO640

And the whole album can be found here.

Great results, looks like you`re a natural at pan shots. Maybe zooming next time or a combo.
Which focus technique did you use?

Thanks! I believe I was all the way zoomed in on those. But, because I was using a MF lens, it doesn't say in the EXIF, it only tells me what focal length in put in the camera. I tried basically all of the ones mentioned, but I got the most by keeping the camera in AF and using catch-in-focus. It was a little tough at first, but I got the hang of it.

he was shooting at f/16... block off the light like that, and you gotta raise iso to bring the brightness back up.

f/16 is well into diffraction territory on crop, it lowered the resolution of everything that was shot, and cleaning up iso noise lowered the rez even further.

I did try a few at the lower f/stops, I believe around f/8-f/11, but with such slow shutter speeds they were way overexposed at ISO100. So then I tried a quicker shutter speed, but it didn't get the background blur that I wanted. So I stopped down the lens.

I realize that they aren't perfect, but for my first time at panning high speed shots, I'm pretty happy with them for the most part.

i like that crx shot the best, it's a winner.

you may have to use an nd filter to get the settings combo you need.

My point was that he could have been at f8-f11 without needing to push the iso. F16 isn't really a requirement for this sort of shot.

i got that, and i thought that you stated it well.

my point went a little further, basically saying that a crop camera shouldn't ever be shot at f/16, unless there is no other choice... i refuse to use f/16 even on ff.

Thanks!

You know, I never even thought of using an ND filter. I'll have to pick one up for next time. Any brands you recommend over another?
