Great images Dave! Thanks for passing them along. I'd love to take that ride someday and hog one of the windows with my K20 and as many memory cards as they'd let me bring.

I've never see stars when there is the black of space in the background of images like these. I'd have thought they'd be bright enough to show up, but I must be wrong about this.

Thanks for sharing Dave,

I was wondering whereabout the second shot is? PS edit: looks like NZL >> Google Maps

And of course wondering what Pentax camera they use :-)

About hurricane pics, here are some from the inside,

And it's one of the main arguments the conspiracy theorists have for saying there were never moon landings -- no stars in the photos, must've been on a sound stage in the Nevada desert. Sheesh....

Awesome images, Dave.

Simply, the stars are not bright enough for the camera to pick up in relation to the sun or reflection of light from the Earth. One can not see the stars during the day here on Earth (with one exception of course)

an easy way to think of the stars is like this..

to properly expose the surface during sunny conditions, you're generally going to follow close to the sunny sixteen rule, f/16 at 1/ISO shutter speed. that exposure, whether for still image, or what it translates to for video capture, is not enough to capture the stars

These are great pics, but I was distracted by all of the Canada stickers on the boom arms.

I was not aware that Canada was that involved in the space program.

Pretty sure the arm on all the Shuttles has always had the Canada insignia.

I wonder if NASA still uses hasselblad?

I saw a program on TV the other day about conspiracy theorists and there 'theories' and you can explain away all of them, most of the ones that surround the photos are easily explained away just by knowing the basics of light, photography and lens characteristics. we have undeniable evidence that we did in fact land on the moon, including the still ongoing laser experiment. its a shame that the 'theorists' wouldn't even do simple research before making outrageous claims.

anyway, wonderful photos, thank you for sharing.

These coincidences are weird. I was just looking at images from space on Wikipedia, and I stumbled upon possibly the most impressive machine-made space shot of our Solar System EVER:

this is not CGI. it is an actual picture taken by the Cassini probe

Indeed it's always been there. Canada has contributed to many parts of the space programme, not least in terms of astronauts. The meteorological station on board the Phoenix Mars Lander is Canadian. But the Canadarm is the most famous example.

Dave,
that's the most awesome picture I've seen.
It's my desktop wallpaper right now.
Thanks for sharing them with us.

It's my dream that one day I'll go up there before I die, and take picture of me with earth as the background

I wonder which Pentax camera and lens should I bring with me when the day come

One that not only is weather-sealed but atmosphere-sealed.
