No - natural lighting for that Hummingbird Clearwing photo, as is usual for most of my shots. I may move towards flash someday but for now I find that keeping things simple leaves me lots of scope. Glad you liked the pic- it's certainly a challenging creature to photograph, but also a lot of fun to be able to react when one appears all of a sudden..

The Nikon 6T and 5T in 62mm work Great with the FA* 80-200 using a step down 77mm to 62mm filter ring.

The ruler at the top is metric, the B&W squares are one cm. The S.B. Anthony dollar is almost exactly one inch in diameter. All images @ f8. Only PP some exposure tweaking so the images would match better.
1. 300 f4 @ closest focus, no attachments; Focus distance (FD) 111.5cm
2. 300 f4 @ infinity with Canon 500D, FD 50cm
3 300 f4 @ closest focus with Canon 500D, FD 34.5cm
4, 300 f4 @ infinity with 25mm Unitube, FD 350cm (3.5 meters)
5. 300 f4 @ closest focus with 25mm Unitube, FD 86cm
6. 300 f4 @ closest focus with 35mm Kenko extension tube, FD 80cm

My conclusion: For photographing largish insects at distance around one meter, the 25mm Unitube is the best bet, but a slightly longer tube (35mm) is also good. The range of 350 ~ 86cm or perhaps 300 ~ 80 cm seems to me pretty useful, BUT note that at the closest focus the width of the 300 f4 without attachments is about 9cm, with the Unitube it goes to about 6cm, only about a 33% increase. In terms of IQ, the extension tube images are significantly better than those taken with the Canon 500D (evaluated by looking at major enlargement on my computer screen).
