Light Meter Recommendations

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone had recommendations for light meters. I'm going to get one to use with my MF system (Mamiya 5645 1000S). It has the metered prism that seems to work pretty well but I figure this would be a good excuse to get one and learn how to use it. I'm thinking about getting a Sekonics L-358. It seems to do most everything i need.

Any suggestions, comments, or advice?

Slick

Hi Slick,

I have the L358M and it's an absolutely fantastic light meter. It does not, however, have spot or flash metering, so you should consider the L-508 etc. if flash photography is something you want to pursue.

Thanks for the info. I thought there was a/an attachment(s) for spot metering. I looked at so many today it's hard to remember now. I'll check out the 508 as well because using it for flash photography would be important.

Perhaps not the best for your intended uses, but I love my Sekonic L-208. Comes with a hotshoe mount and is small enough to easily fit in my pants pocket. Easy to use handheld or mounted on a camera.

Hi Mike.

I looked at the L-208 at first but, of course, I kept looking at the next model up, and so on, and so on...

It is a nice one and would probably work fine for me.

Still trying to decide and thanks for the recommendation.

Last fall when I took a photography class, the instructor highly recommended the L358. I haven't gotten around to picking up a meter yet, but if I was to get the L358, I'd most likely see if I could pick it up used off of Fleabay, as I'd rather not pay over $200 for a meter, new or used. As I was looking at the Sekonics, another model that got my attention was the L308s, which is just a step below the L358. Brand new, it costs less than $200.

Sekonic | L-308S Flashmate Light Meter | 401309 | B&H Photo Video

It gets high ratings from users on B&H, so it is definitely a contender for me.

Hi Heather.

The main problem for me right now is deciding if I need/want spot metering capability. The main reason I was looking at the L-358 is you can add spot later. It costs another ~$150 but at least the option is available. The L-308 does look like a good meter, though.

I'm not too worried about cost but I'm not going to spend a bunch of money on one since I don't know how much I'll use it. I travel internationally for work and don't bring my MF stuff with me (usually) so typically it would only get used a few times a year.

I'll probably go with the L-508 now that I've looked a little more. At KEH the L-358 (new) is ~$250 and the L-508 (EX+) is ~$310. If I add the spot meter attachment to the L-358 the cost goes to ~$400. The L-508 has spot already.
