The bird flew right over and landed in the field next to where we were at. There were 8 or 9 buzzards flying around above us and that's what the Eagle was looking at.

So many variables. Humidity in the air makes haze, often bad at ground level - plus tiny insects in the air and just turbulence all spoil it. I'll look at airplane images - OK, a thousand feet away maybe, and they'll be in focus, but just terrible resolution.
Except when it's like -5F outside, the air is pretty dry then!

It is discouraging, though, I'll admit. Now you see why people get in blinds before dawn.

Yesterday I took a laser range finder with me to see just how far I am shooting. I didn't get any eagle action but I spotted a pair of ospreys building their nest. Range finder said it was 336 yards away from me, normally I wouldn't even have bothered but I wanted to see how the picture would come out. The first image is not cropped and the second is. It's not great but I don't think it's horrible either. For a large mammal you could get away with it probably.

That's a good picture. At 336 yards it's amazing. I'm going to have to work on my technique a little more for wildlife. Probably better stabilization will help.

this is obviously not a good shot

just shy of a half mile at "720mm" with a point and shoot
rising heat and high humidity

shot it to document a new nest and a sitting bird
its mate was off chasing pelicans

as mentioned above pushing that much air makes a good shot difficult
mirage just controls the day
