Experimenting ( Didn't go so well )

Well , wanted to try this for a long time .. Unfortunately the barrel of the lens is just too narrow ( I was 50-50 as to whether it would work or not )
Due to the design of the macro lens - the Jupiter sits too far forward of the front element - I may have to try it with some other lenses .
Anyway , some - somewhat rubbish images ..

Actually, these are great. Been playing with reversed enlarger lenses on a M200/4 lately myself.
I really like the circular effect a lot, like looking through a portal into the micro world.

Not bad for a "failed" experiment! What about adding a bit of extension between the 50 macro and the camera body? Sure it'll crop out the lens tube, but also crop into the image and eat light, but whaddya got to lose?

Yeah , I was thinking of a tube .. Not sure what it will do to the POF ( point of focus )

I'm guessing that introducing extension would move the POF closer, reducing your working distance. I find working with higher magnification tends to limit me to slower insects. It's all good, though, I like what I get. At some point I'll get a longer 1:1 lens; I've got the Sigma 70mm f2.8, which is great, but still sometimes not long enough. I do enjoy messing around with lens stacking and reversing rings, too.

Working distance is already about 30mm , which is difficult .
I really don't need to get closer ...

I will have to keep my eye out for a affordable M42 50mm

I don't crop !
I found cropping to be a crutch , one that stops a person from moving forward ( improving ) .

I did crop , but I found it did nothing for my photography development ( I would describe cropping a little like applying the hand break ) .. So quite a few years ago I stopped the practice . I simply refuse to do it now .

As long as the resolution is greater than the viewing size, cropping isn't a crutch - it's a tool. Knowing and leveraging your equipment's capacity is a key part of this hobby.

Yeah I understand that ! ...
But I don't crop .. If I want to get closer then I do it via hardware . ( lens )

I don't think the problem is the Jupiter -- it's the host lens. I used to reverse my f/1.8 55mm Super Takumar on the front of my f/3.8 75-205mm close focusing Vivitar zoom lens. I never saw circular vignetting. I realize that the front element of the Jupiter might be more recessed than the Takumar's, but I think my reversing adapter set-up was fatter than what you are using, enough to make up for the difference.

What is the next longest lens you could put the reversed Jupiter on?

Alternately, you could also try putting a slim extension tube between the Pentax 50 and the camera body to see if that reduces or eliminates the circle.

Also, if you have a way to crop those first experiment images circularly, I think they'd look pretty cool.

Its the jupiter ...
I tried it in front of another 50mm , same result .
I need a much wider internal barrel ..

Took a action camera , re focused the lens , and played with it ... ( It works and is relatively cheap to do )

Check out youtube . a lot of people have done it
