I posted my pic in responce to Wheatfield's comments but there were several posts made while I was getting it uploaded, Salty, but you and Wheatfield are right and unfortunately I don't have any pics of dead bodies to photoshop in:-).
In fact, rereading "A picture which is, by design, intended to make the viewer think about more than how pretty the colours are is a good start to defining it." I got it all wrong because that was my intention with this pic, to get a pic that was all about the pretty colors!
Sorry guys, I guess I was looking for an excuse to post this pic, even if it was a sorry excuse, lol.
Well, it is a pretty picture full of pretty colours.....

Non-conformist. Pushing society's boundaries to an almost unacceptable point by societal standards. As an example, the Annie Liebovitz photo of a naked John Lennon snuggled up to a fully clothed Yoko Ono.

Would a picture of a kitten being roasted on a spit with the sun setting over a tropical beach be edgy?

I think edgy is something that pushes the edges of acceptability, convention, expectation etc..

I think this is the closest definition so far to my understanding of the term.

It's something that makes you feel 'on edge'. Pushed almost off-balance but not quite falling over; made to feel uncomfortable; it's likely to be a a bit disturbing, but not so much that it revolts you.

So the roasting kitten wouldn't be edgy, since it's gone too far - it would just be gross.

I agree,

its often also used to describe dave hill / lucisart styles etc so edgy being something new or "cutting edge".

Or the edge between art and crap

Edgy - yeah, pushes the boundaries a bit, but doesn't smash them. Something that confounds or challenges your concepts of what photography is, but not in a way that permits you to discard it as twaddle or not photography. Conventions come in to play, as does peer pressure. If you like it, it is good edgy: you get to foist your avant garde taste on the masses, which is a part of the edgy appeal. If it is bad edgy: the masses foist their taste on you...

Commercially, for some reason I think of the word "sassy" which is the tweenie version of "sexy".

Here it kinda means, trend setting, fashion leader and standing out from the crowd by being purposefully different.

Its a young folk thing
