Basically yes... you leave it on infinity (shortest length) and you have a 2x TC, so you get a 100mm f/3.4 from the 50/1.7. You focus with the lens' helicoid.
You can use it for
close-up work: leave the 50mm @infinity focus and by rotating the TC helicoid you get 1:1.5- to 1:20 magnification (white scale).
You can use it for
macro work: focus the 50mm @0.45m and by rotating the TC helicoid you get 1:1 to 1:3 magnification (green scale).
I've found that by using the M100/2.8 at f/5.6 (resulting 200/11) it's better than the M200/4 at the same aperture. By knowing the best aperture of your lenses you can get astounding results.
